چکیده

A ground-based, scanning, near-infrared (1064 nm) lidar, the Echidna® validation instrument (EVI), built by CSIRO Australia, retrieves structural parameters of forest stands rapidly and accurately, and by merging multiple scans into a single point cloud also provides 3-D stand reconstructions. Scans and field work in the USA (New England in 2007 and the Sierra Nevada of California in 2008) show that retrievals of mean tree diameter, stem count density (stems/ha), basal area, above-ground woody biomass, and leaf area index for 1-ha plots match conventional field measurements very well. Three-D forest reconstructions provide the ability to make virtual structural measurements that also match field meas-

Processing Full-waveform Lidar Data to Extract Forest Parameters and Digital Terrain Model: Validation in an Alpine Coniferous Forest

Small footprint discrete return lidar data have already proved useful for providing information on forest areas. During the last decade, a new generation of airborne laser scanners, called full-waveform (FW) lidar systems, has emerged. They digitize and record the entire backscattered signal of each emitted pulse. Fullwaveform data hold large potentialities. In this study, we investigated the p...

Tree Species Detection Accuracies Using Discrete Point Lidar and Airborne Waveform Lidar

Species information is a key component of any forest inventory. However, when performing forest inventory from aerial scanning Lidar data, species classification can be very difficult. We investigated changes in classification accuracy while identifying five individual tree species (Douglas-fir, western redcedar, bigleaf maple, red alder, and black cottonwood) in the Pacific Northwest United St...

Forest cover changes in the Oregon Coast Range from 1939 to 1993

Understanding the shifts over time in the distribution and amount of forest vegetation types in relation to forest management and environmental conditions is critical for many policy and ecological questions. Our objective was to assess the influences of ownership and environment on changes in forest vegetation from post-settlement historical to recent times in the central Coast Range of Oregon...

Using Small-Footprint Discrete and Full-Waveform Airborne LiDAR Metrics to Estimate Total Biomass and Biomass Components in Subtropical Forests

An accurate estimation of total biomass and its components is critical for understanding the carbon cycle in forest ecosystems. The objectives of this study were to explore the performances of forest canopy structure characterization from a single small-footprint Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) dataset using two different techniques focusing on (i) 3-D canopy structural information by discr...

Three-stage inversion improvement for forest height estimation using dual-PolInSAR data

This paper addresses an algorithm for forest height estimation using single frequency single baseline dual polarization radar interferometry data. The proposed method is based on a physical two layer volume over ground model and is represented using polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry (PolInSAR) technique. The presented algorithm provides the opportunity to take advantages of t...
